There’s been quite a few more of these food posts recently, I guess I’m making up for lost time or something. Anyway, without further ado

1. Tomato ramen – トマトラーメン

So I’d heard about this before (oddly enough from an anime specifically about ramen), so I figured, “hey this could be interesting”.

It was definitely interesting. I got the standard tomato ramen + cheese topping (+ beer!). I got asked if I’d like a paper apron (bib), and not being able to eat ramen properly (read: the whole slurping thing that I totally can’t do), I said yes, so whilst reading this just imagine me wearing a paper bib.

Right, the taste…it was actually really really good. So it’s a standard ramen combination of noodles + veggies + pork + oil, but with the addition of a tomato based stock/sauce. Thinking about it now, of course it was good, you’ve got the basis of an italian dish going here, just with a twist.

There’s also garlic oil, tabasco, pepper and some other herbs that you can add freely, and the addition of the garlic oil really seals the deal in terms of taste. It was so good that I even ordered a second portion of noodles (known as “kaedama” – 替玉) to mop up the remaining sauce.

So whilst I don’t think I’d choose this over a classic soy sauce-based ramen (醤油ラーメン), it definitely is worth a try!

2. Coriander Pretzel Sticks

Made by the same company that makes ‘Pocky’, but a savoury version.

So just imagine pretzels, but with loads of salt (good so far right), and then add in a bunch of coriander flavouring.

I’m going to be honest, I bought these thinking “these are so weird, are they supposed to be sweet?”, but after I’d realised they were savoury, they were actually pretty good. As mentioned, the flavour is mostly salt, but the coriander does come across strong enough to make it such that if you didn’t like coriander these would be totally inedible.

3. Japanese-style breakfast (和食の朝食)

So all this stuff is pretty straightforward, we’ve got:

  • Rice
  • Vegetables + inariage (sweet tofu pocket things)
  • Raw egg
  • Grilled mackerel + grated daikon radish
  • Beansprouts in oil
  • Tsukemono (japanese pickled…stuff, including pickled plum aka umeboshi)
  • Dry seaweed (nori) sheets
  • Miso soup
  • Green tea

Phwoar, so much food. When people say “Japanese breakfast” this is completely typical of that. Some other additions you occasionally see are “natto” (just google it) and rice porridge.
